Yes! I remember my "poor" relations had plastic curtains. I was beginning to think my memory was faulty doing a search for "plastic curtains" on Google. Glad to know I was remembering correctly and others remember them too.
I remember chenille bedspreads and linoleum rugs and ice boxes. I am sixty. I remember S & H green stamps and Top Value stamps and getting our everyday glasses from Old Virginia jelly or from the gas station.
I have a pie pan in hard metal stamped "Mrs. Smith's Pies" that my grandmother used for many years.
I remember thin Christmas paper and paper ribbon that did not cost more than the gift.
Yes, we certainly can do with a lot less and still be just as happy...if not happier.

I loved the Smilebox and it gives me a clearer picture of your life. You are a beautiful lady. I really enjoyed the stories of life in the log cabin and hunting with your dad.
Warm regards to you,
Ruby

Dear 1coolgranny, I just read your really neat comment on my blog today, (Blabbin' Grammy), and with great interest backtracked to this website. How really interesting your whole combination of website/blogs are! Is Growing Up Country your blogsite? All the pictures are really interesting on all of this. Please come back and visit and give me the actual link to your blogspot. I enjoyed reading about all the medical aids you have. I don't know if you have read enough of my blog to know that I was ill all summer trying to recover from gall bladder surgery gone bad (first surgeon cut hepatic artery and nicked bile duct) and I had to have urgent reconstructive surgery a week later at Vanderbilt. Wound up with abcessed liver which took forever to clear up. Praise God, I am much better now. Warmest Regards to you. Ruby

I also can picture my first grade Alice & Jerry basic reader. "Run Jip Run". I've been searching for that copy for years...still. I came across your blog during my search and enjoyed going back to those better days. Thank you.

Such a cool story! I think I have mentioned on here that when I was a child I would get mad at Mom because she made me go to school in Hyden and wouldn't let me attend the one room school on Hurricane. I always thought I missed something special and now I know that for a fact lol. Thanks for a great story.

I'm pretty sure I remember Mom talking about tin can rollers when I was little. I love your stories. I don't remember much about Big Branch because I was so little, but what I remember is always nice. Grandma snapping beans, sitting around a big table with a lot of people talking and my favorite toy when I was there (an egg turner?). We rode a mule over there and I absolutely hated riding that mule. It was way too high and I was scared of falling off lol. What great memories!
