I am a 5th generation Appalachian from Southeastern Kentucky and proud of it! To borrow (and edit) a phrase from Phil Williams, WNOX radio talk show host, I am American by birth, Appalachian by the grace of God, and Hillbilly by choice! We, who are from Southern Appalachia or have roots here, are a blessed people. Appalachia is rich in culture and tradition and we should revel in it’s uniqueness instead of being ashamed of our roots. This blog is all about exploring this joy through sharing.
I am one of 10 children born to Ottis A. & Rachel Johnson Bowling. I was born in Hyden, Kentucky in 1950, the “baby” of the family . 1950 sat with one leg on each side of the cultural fence and was the edge of the old and the dawn of the new for Appalachia. It was the deviding point between what once was the mountain way of life and what now is! I am privilaged to be able to live in the new while experiencing and remembering the old. We tend to look back with nostalgia but let us not forget the hardships as well.
