This Easter weekend my husband and I went to our building lot on Lake Cumberland in the Nancy, Ky area. We spent part of the day cleaning off the debris from where we had removed some big trees. It was windy and cold so we decided to come on home. There is a little restaurant in Nancy called the Kountry Korner. I had stopped there a few weeks before just to use the rest room when I noticed a sign that announced they had a live bluegrass band on Saturday nights. The waitress told me that they had bluegrass music each Tuesday and Saturday at 6PM and invited me back when the band was there. I told my husband we should stop there to eat supper. He agreed so we did just that. We got there about 5:30 and the place was already packed. There was only one empty table left. We sat there. The waitress brought the menu. There was a variety of sandwich combos, pizza, etc. The prices were amazing inexpensive! For example, we had Reuben sandwiches, fries and a drink. Each of our combos were only $4.80. The food was excellent. I ordered a piece of peanut butter pie that was sinfully delicious! The coffee was fresh and just right for finishing off a light meal and the pie. At 6 on the dot the bluegrass band assembled in the front where their sound system was already set up. They began to play and I was amazed at how great they were. They sounded as professional as any group I have heard locally. I didn’t get the name of the group because I had to leave before they were done playing. Many in the crowd danced the old time clogging style. It was wonderful. I plan to return again and I will tell you more at that time. I recommend this for everyone who loves bluegrass! The music is free, there is no cover charge. A collection is taken up for them and you put in whatever you want or nothing at all but the group is so good you will want to give!
Does anyone remember having plastic curtains on their windows? I was just thinking about this the other day. Each spring Mommy would paint all the iron bed steads and the edges of the floor where the 12 X 12 foot linoleum didn’t cover the whole floor with brown enamel. She would go to town and buy new plastic curtains from the dime store for all the windows. If daddy had got to work good she would order new chenille bedspreads from the Montgomery Ward catalogue where daddy had a credit. We sure thought they were pretty. We didn’t know we were “poor” back then. We lived just like everyone else did. Now, we think we have to have the latest in expensive custom made drapes and matching bed sets. I know it is an odd thing to remember with fondness but I do. It is a reminder to me that we can do with a lot less than we think we can and be happier for it!
